Fishing Report Capt. Gary Luetge Fins ‘N Feathers Guide Service & Lodging 979-244-2155 www.sargent-eastbay-guide.com
EAST MATAGORDA BAY – Fishing the past few weeks has been spotty. Best catches are coming from open waters when wind allows. The wind has been a big factor for anglers trying to work open waters. Mixed mud & mixed shell have produced good catches of trout when winds are light. Soft plastics bounced off the bottom have produced best. Big shell & mid-shell have also produced good catches of trout & red fish throwing soft plastics. These areas are the most productive throughout the winter months, but winds play a big factor because they are out over the open water. Live Oak & Chinquipin Reefs have been good for wading or drifting for trout & red fish, also bouncing soft plastics off the bottom. Drifting out in front of Bird Island around the log area & Oyster Farm east has been a little on the slow side. These fish are moving into their winter pattern. Wading the south shoreline has been hit or miss. Good warming trend will help these areas. East end has been fair for trout & red fish. Bouncing soft plastics off the bottom or live shrimp under a popping cork has produced best. Also, lots of drum around the parallel reefs & good whiting coming from the same areas. Fresh dead shrimp fished on the bottom is the key. MITCHELL'S CUT – According to several reports, fishing has been a little on the slow side. The best catches are coming from the grassy point area. Trout & red fish have been fair to good using live bait or soft plastics. Lots of puppy drum & whiting have been caught along the banks using dead shrimp on the bottom.
