Fishing Report
EAST MATAGORDA BAY – Not much as changed over the past few weeks. Some days trout are few & far between. Other days you can have a decent pay off. The best catches are coming from open water around slicks & drifting over mud bottoms. Wading or drifting mid-bay reefs has remained on the slow side. There is not as many strong tide movements in this month. Also, rain is a big problem. Everybody seems to get rain except Sargent. Wading the south shoreline has been hit or miss. Red fish have been the best catches coming from the shoreline with scattered trout & an occasional flounder. Slow rolled plastics have been the ticket. Live Oak has also been slow around the reefs. This past month we have had a pretty sustained west or west southwest wind. This has kept the water pretty stirred up and making it tough for the anglers to drift. The east end is still on the slow side. Few reds over open water or around the reefs but a lot of the fish are funning small. Hopefully, we are going to get some rain here soon & this will help the fishing dramatically. With all the good months ahead of us, east bay will start producing some good stringers of trout & reds. SARGENT BEACH FRONT (surf) –Fishing the surf has been fair to good. When winds are light & the surf is calm, there are reports of good catches of pan fish, shark, jack fish & lots of gafftop. Trout still are hard to find at times because the gafftop won’t leave you alone. Surf has really kicked up this past week due to west winds & will remain this way until winds lay again. Bull reds have been fair at best. MITCHELL’S CUT – Fishing remains spotty in this area, too. There has been some slot reds caught around the banks in the cut on in or out going tides. Dead bait on the bottom has been the ticket. There have been a few trout & reds hanging around the grassy point area. Live shrimp under popping corks has done the trick on these. Pan fish have been fair at best using fresh dead shrimp on the bottom. Around the mouth there have been some trout being caught when water is fishable. Also, some bull reds around the same areas using cut mullet on the bottom. CANEY CREEK – According to several reports, fishing has been slow here, too. Very few trout being caught at night under the lights. Some reports of lots of small sand trout being caught on soft plastics, but not much else. CEDAR LAKE & COW TRAP –Haven’t had any reports coming from this area in the past couple of weeks.Remember, a safe trip is the best trip - good luck on your next outing. Capt. Gary
